A very warm welcome to Kpopmap, Kim JaeWon! It is an honor to have you with us today. Before we get into the artistry of Kim JaeWon, we want to know a little bit about your goals as an artist. Every actor has aspirations and an idea of how they want to be remembered by the public. How would you describe the image you want people to remember you as?

I believe actors should be thorough in their ‘self-discipline’. Also, when setting goals and striving towards them, I think ‘consistency’ is equally important. I want to become a seasoned actor who consistently challenges various things while maintaining rigorous self-discipline. It would be great if I were perceived as someone with a lot to learn.

What is the first thing you do to get into character? Do you have any rituals or exercises that help you?

I first check if there are any points in the character’s personality that align with my real-life self. To convince and immerse the audience, I think it’s essential for me to be closest to my character, more so than anyone else, in order to naturally portray them. I find similarities with the character and, additionally, build the character by imagining “how the character would have acted.”

Are you able to connect and disconnect with your characters easily? Was there ever a character that stayed with you longer than you’d expected? Alternatively, have you ever felt like you wanted to play a character for a little longer?

Actually, I feel like I can easily transition between on-set and off-set. Work is work, and reality is reality. Of course, during filming, I immerse myself and focus on my character more than anyone else. However, it feels like I come back to myself as soon as the scene ends.

Has the experience of living out different lives through acting ever helped you in your own life? For example, have you ever thought, “What would RoUn do in this situation?”

When portraying a character, I tend to live my daily life as that character during the filming period. So, during the months of filming “King The Land”, I made an effort to live like RoUn. This time, as I had to portray a flight attendant, I didn’t want to portray the profession haphazardly. Therefore, I sought advice from friends who are flight attendants and tried to embody the fundamental attitude of a flight attendant. Through this process, I realized how demanding the job of a flight attendant is and now, whenever I board a plane, I express more gratitude to the flight attendants and treat them even more kindly.

Out of all the characters you have played, who do you think you would be best friends with?

That would be RoUn. His straightforward way of speaking in the drama is refreshing, and I want to learn that aspect.

If you could manifest your dream role, what kind of role would it be and what genre of drama or film would you cast yourself in?

I’d like to experience various genres. It would be great if I could be an actor who suits all sorts of genres. I’d love to portray a charismatic character. A character with charm, and one where I feel the urge to infuse my own colors.

Your upcoming project is the Netflix series “Hierarchy”. It is highly anticipated among fans already, and the expectations for Kim Ryan are growing day by day. What new sides of you as an actor can viewers expect to see with this new drama?

I’m currently in the midst of filming, and you can expect to see sides of me that you haven’t seen before. Please look forward to the Netflix series “Hierarchy” as well.

Life Behind the Lens – Kim JaeWon’s Perspective

Mystic Story

Acting is a profession where there’s no such thing as clocking in and out. How do you maintain your work-life balance in the face of such demanding schedules?

In a profession without the concept of regular hours, I strive to bring routine into my daily life. Even after challenging schedules, I maintain a consistent routine the next day. I exercise around lunchtime, read my script, and create a routine that suits me. Over time, I naturally wake up without an alarm and make the most of my days, ensuring a balance.

As a rising actor yourself, have you ever felt starstruck by seeing a sunbaenim you respect? Who was it? Can you tell us about your feelings at that time?

I often find that my role models change depending on the circumstances. This time, while filming “King The Land,” I felt I learned a lot from senior actor Lee JunHo. JunHo sunbaenim warmly cared for juniors on set. Moreover, the path he has trodden until now appeared to be remarkably steadfast and robust. Thus, I wonder if that’s why he currently possesses the deep and profound acting prowess that he exudes. I, too, aspire to be a seasoned actor who is warm and considerate to juniors, well-centered, and good at self-management.

The cast of “King The Land” is receiving much appreciation and love for their impeccable chemistry. Can you tell us about any endearing behind-the-scenes episodes that touched your heart?

The chemistry among the six siblings in “King The Land” was truly remarkable. Just like in the drama, our chemistry was great in real life too. During our shoot in Thailand, we all gathered in the same hotel room every night, enjoyed meals together, had various conversations, and played games. Looking back, I think these joyful memories are very touching. I believe the bond among the six siblings from “King The Land” will remain in my memories for a long time. Additionally, the director, writer, and the staff members were all incredibly hardworking and warm, making it a project for which I’m truly grateful.

We know you are good at speaking English, how do you maintain your level?

I’m not exceptionally fluent, to be honest. (laughs) My listening skills are decent enough. I’ve liked English since I was young. During my school days, I enjoyed English classes the most, and that fondness still remains. I hope to enhance my skills further so that I can engage in fluent conversations.

You mentioned that you wanted to do a project in relation to sports, especially swimming. It seems like you are very passionate about sports. Can you tell us more about this hobby?

I’ve been swimming since I was young. I think I did it for about 7-8 years. I was even prepared for a sports career and dreamt about it, so it’s a sport I’ve loved a lot, and that passion still remains. If I could work on a project that showcases my swimming skills, that would be wonderful.

One of the best parts of being an actor has to be the fans. What was your most heartwarming fan encounter so far?

Until now, I haven’t had a proper chance to directly communicate with fans. I find that quite regrettable. I hope to have the opportunity soon, perhaps through fan meetings or similar events, to express my gratitude and reciprocate the warm feelings from fans. I really want to meet everyone.

Finally, can you say a few words for your overseas fans?

These are times of rapid changes. During such moments, I hope you take good care of your health and maintain a healthy daily routine. I’ve received a lot of support and love from you, and it’s because of fans like you that I’m here. I’ll continue to show new sides of myself, so please continue to look forward to it. I love you all.
