IU is currently at the center of controversy due to recent plagiarism allegations, which have shocked many as one of the accusers is reportedly a middle school classmate of IU. On the 11th, EDAM Entertainment stated, “Some of the personal information of those who defamed IU without basis around April to May last year has been identified, and one of them is presumed to be a middle school classmate of IU.” They added that they are legally responding to the continuous harassment against IU.
IU has faced plagiarism allegations online and was also reported to the police for copyright law violations. However, the police dismissed the case, and IU’s side is pursuing a civil lawsuit for damages against the accuser. The first hearing related to this case was held on July 24th at the Seoul Central District Court, but the opposing party did not attend. The second hearing is scheduled for December 4th.
EDAM Entertainment, representing IU legally through Shinwon Law Firm, has publicly disclosed the status of criminal complaints from 2023 to 2024, stating their principle to punish malicious post creators without settlements or leniency. The agency emphasized, “We will continue to respond strongly to malicious post creators and urge you to stop illegal activities online.”
Since last year, a total of over 180 people have been sued for threats, insults, defamation, and production of illegal composites against IU. Some have received fines and conditional suspensions of indictment with education requirements. Notably, the incident where IU was falsely accused of being a spy and spreading rumors has been forwarded to the prosecution. Through continuous legal actions, IU and her agency are likely to maintain a strong stance moving forward. Future developments are highly anticipated.
