The much-anticipated sequel to Netflix’s global hit, ‘Squid Game’, is finally stepping into the spotlight. After more than two years of meticulous filming and post-production, the curtain is ready to rise on what is set to be another landmark in K-content history.
In December last year, Netflix invited both domestic and international media to an exclusive preview of two iconic sets for ‘Squid Game 2’ in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. The announcement was shrouded in mystery with an undefined embargo period, but nearly a year later, the world is about to see what’s been brewing behind the scenes.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, alongside Kim Ji-yeon of Siren Pictures and art director Chae Kyung-sun, were present at the reveal. Director Hwang shared insights into the new season, stating that protagonist Seong Gi-hun returns to the game arena, driven by his personal quest. This season introduces a fresh ensemble of characters, as many beloved characters met their end in the first season. The new lineup includes well-known actors such as Yim SiWan, Kang HaNeul, Park GyuYoung, and T.O.P, among others.
Director Hwang highlighted the diversity in the new season, featuring participants of various ages and genders, and hinted at deeper personal connections between characters. The set design has evolved significantly, presenting a more intricate and colorful maze. It’s designed to challenge the imagination with its complexity and vivid color palette.
Art director Chae Kyung-sun elaborated on the enhancements made from season one, explaining that they have expanded the set’s dimensions, adding new passageways and increasing the height by 11 meters for a grander design. The accommodation set is now vast enough to hold a large cast and crew comfortably.
Despite the success of other Netflix series like ‘D.P.’ and ‘Sweet Home’, which faced criticism for their sequels, hopes are high for ‘Squid Game 2’. Director Hwang is keenly aware of the pressure to meet audience expectations and is determined to deliver a compelling sequel.
‘Squid Game 2’ is set to premiere on December 26, promising viewers a thrilling continuation of the story. As anticipation builds, fans are eager to see how this new chapter unfolds, setting the stage for what could be another groundbreaking success in the realm of Korean entertainment.
