The Netflix original series ‘Squid Game 2′, set to be released on December 26, focuses on the social conflicts spreading worldwide as its main theme. Director Hwang DongHyuk recently introduced the new themes and content of the second season through an open set in Daejeon.
Season 1 ended with the protagonist Seong GiHun deciding not to board a plane. In Season 2, the story revolves around Seong GiHun’s return to the game arena. Director Hwang explained that the process of Seong GiHun choosing to return to the game to achieve his goals will unfold intriguingly.
In particular, Season 2 introduces a voting opportunity after each game, where participants can choose whether to leave or stay. This system acts as a device to trigger conflicts among participants, reflecting the frequent polarization and conflict in society today. Director Hwang revealed that this setup was introduced to satirically depict regional, religious, and generational conflicts.
This season will feature new actors, including Kang HaNeul and Yim SiWan, with a greater presence of young participants. Director Hwang expressed his enjoyment of collaborating with new actors and stated that the characters they create will add to the appeal of Season 2.
