“I’ve Become A True Villainess” by Flowing HonEy is one of the most popular isegye webtoons Korea has to offer, and it has received much love from fans all over the world. It tells the story of an ordinary graduate student who, after a fatal accident, wakes up in a different world. Soon, she realizes that she is in the world of the romance novel she had been reading, but there’s a catch! She’s not herself. In fact, she is not even the heroine of the story. As the title suggests, she is Seria Sterne, the villainess of the romance novel she had been reading, heading straight towards a tragic beheading. To make matters worse, her fiancé, Marquis Callis Hanneton, has no interest in her, but instead, the heroine, Lina’s fiancé, Archduke Rouche Berk, does. To avoid her untimely death, she must mend the villainess’ ways and protect her head, but things don’t always go as planned, especially when it comes to matters of the heart.

Soon, a heated love triangle unfolds, giving us the most butterfly-inducing male lead, Archduke Rouche Berk. He is a walking green flag, to say the least, a devoted lover, a protector, and a sweetheart. Callis? Not so much, even as he tries to win Seria back. Lina is a dimension-hopping Saint, who soon earns the title of “Sterne”, just like Seria, and now, there’s not much time left for Seria to set things straight.

The audio drama adaptation stars Rebecca Rose as Seria Sterne, Shogo Miyakita as Archduke Rouche Berk, Hao Feng as Marquis Callis Hanneton, and Suzie Rai as Lina. As the webtoon is set in a vaguely medieval European-esque setting, the audio drama adaptation in English is not at all awkward. In fact, it is unexpectedly easy to be engrossed in the story, thanks to our spirited protagonist Seria, and her voice artist Rebecca Rose.
With a bright and chirpy voice that perfectly fits a manhwa protagonist, Rebecca has a way of making you care for her character, endearing her to you at once. At the same time, she can be firm and assertive when there’s a need for it.

Then, we have Shogo Miyakita as Archduke Rouche Berk, with a delectably rich and addictive baritone, leaving our jaws hanging on the floor. Even before you find out that he is the real male lead, your heart will already be swaying in his direction, thanks to the voice artist’s outstanding performance. It is almost as if you can see the scene playing out in front of you, with how Rebecca Rose and Shogo Miyakita play off of each other.
Marquis Callis Hanneton, on the other hand, is the perfect blend of arrogant and pitiful, making him the perfect second male lead in this situation. Oh, to see, or rather, hear him beg for Seria and rebuke Lina is ear candy at its best. Hao Feng’s voice comes across as youthful, passionate, feisty, and perfectly aggravating in scenes that demand such emotions.

Similarly, Suzie Rai, who plays Lina, the protagonist of the novel and the antagonist of “I’ve Become A True Villainess”, has a high-pitched voice and an English accent, making her stand out at once. No matter how much you despise Lina, you cannot help but think it is only because Suzie Rai is doing such a fantastic job voicing her. Now, that’s true talent right there.
In addition, the ambient sounds in the audio drama contribute to the immersion, making the listening experience a true delight. Even the fantasy aspect of the webtoon comes across crystal clear! Considering how well-made this audio drama is, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that audio dramas are the future of the webtoon industry. We’re already reading webtoons day and night, so imagine how many more incredible works we could be discovering if we could listen to audio dramas on the way to work, during break at school, and so on and so forth, just like podcasts! It’s definitely a future we are looking forward to.
