With the release of Season 2 of Netflix’s much-discussed ‘Hellbound’, attention is being drawn to the transformation of the character Min HyeJin and the passionate performance by actress Kim HyunJoo. ‘Hellbound’ is a drama depicting a supernatural phenomenon where mysterious beings suddenly appear to announce the date of people’s condemnation to hell. In Season 1, it portrayed a world thrown into chaos due to these proclamations and demonstrations. Season 2 focuses on events that unfold as Jung JinSoo, the leader of the religious group New Truth Society, and Park JungJa, whose demonstration was broadcast, come back to life.
In Season 2, Min HyeJin sheds her previous lawyer image and returns as a warrior. There are opinions that this setting is unrealistic, but Kim HyunJoo explained, “Min HyeJin is a person who does not hesitate to uphold her beliefs in an era where lawyers are no longer needed.” She particularly noted, “I tried to express HyeJin’s inner self through action scenes,” and added, “The process of training hard, sweating, and feeling a sense of achievement was enjoyable.”
In preparing for the role of Min HyeJin, Kim HyunJoo said, “I pondered over whether it is right for a character trying to set the world straight to resort to violence.” However, she highlighted Min HyeJin’s strength as “constantly reflecting on and questioning her actions.” Debuting in 1997 and now a 27-year veteran actress, Kim HyunJoo is showing further growth through this work.
She expressed her desire to take on new challenges, saying, “I’ve played many roles on the side of justice, but now I want to try playing a villainous role.” There is growing anticipation for what new aspects her challenges will reveal in the future.
