On November 30, 2024, the 35th Annual Academic Conference analyzing Lim YoungWoong’s socio-cultural influence will be held in the main auditorium on the 3rd floor of Korea National Open University’s main building. This event is jointly organized by the Korean Popular Music Society and the Sungkonghoe University East Asia Institute, where various scholars will engage in in-depth discussions about Lim YoungWoong’s music and the discourses surrounding him.
The Korean Popular Music Society emphasized the necessity of this academic conference by stating, “Lim YoungWoong emerged like a comet through ‘Mister Trot’ and became a socio-cultural phenomenon beyond just a trot singer.” Since there have been limited academic opportunities to explore his musical journey and social impact, this conference further elevates its value.
Professor Lee WoongHee from Kyungbok University will deliver the keynote speech under the theme ‘Who is Hero?’, while Professor Park AeKyoung from Yonsei University, Professor Kim HeeSun from Kookmin University, Professor Kim HeeSun from Kyung Hee University, and Professor Lee SoJin from Kyung Hee University will each present on Lim YoungWoong’s music and genre performance. Additionally, Professor Jang YooJeong from Dankook University and Professor Kwon JungGoo from Sungkyul University will discuss Lim YoungWoong’s narrative and copyright status. Cultural critic Ha JaeGeun will attend as the chairperson to lead the general discussion.
Meanwhile, a roundtable to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the inaugural issue of ‘Song’, considered the pioneer of Korean popular music research, will be held in the morning.
Interestingly, Lim YoungWoong will hold the ‘Lim YoungWoong Recital’ at Seoul Gocheok Sky Dome from December 27 to 29, and from January 2 to 4, 2025. This academic conference and performance offer a new opportunity to shed light on Lim YoungWoong’s profound charm, raising expectations for how his music and cultural influence will develop in the future.
