Laure šŸŒ¼Spring is here! Well, at least the start of itā€”but donā€™t be surprised if it still snows, even with temperatures reaching 17Ā°C. New cafĆ© menus are out, and everyone is talking about the upcoming cherry blossoms or their plans for spring and its festivals. But as you may know, with hwanjeolgi (ķ™˜ģ ˆźø°) ā€” the change of seasons ā€” comes a wave of illnesses and skin troubles, so stores have been selling lots of vitamins lately.

But do you know the biggest sign that spring has arrived? Fashion is no longerā€¦ all black! In Seoul, people are shedding their black puffer jackets and embracing brighter spring colors. Weā€™re still waiting for a bit of green or some flowers to truly mark the change, but in any case, spring seems to have officially begun, and new trends are already emerging.

Curious about Koreaā€™s hottest trends? Make sure to read our newsletter for the latest updates on Koreaā€™s spring trends!

šŸŽ¬ Bitter Tangerines: An Ode To Unspoken Dreams

Mansata šŸ§šā€œWhen Life Gives You Tangerinesā€, a Netflix hit, centers on a pathetic couple (IU as AeSun and Park BoGum as GwangSik), both beaten down by lifeā€™s hardships. The drama portrays their struggle with societal pressures, failure, and the constant feeling of being stuck. Rather than chasing dreams, they seem trapped in a cycle of giving up, sacrificing their hopes for the next generation. Itā€™s a tribute to parentsā€™ quiet suffering, filled with antihero protagonists who are painfully relatable. Sweet yet heartbreaking, tangerines have never tasted so bitter.

šŸ’’ From Being Called By Your Name To ā€˜Just Momā€™

Mansata šŸ§š In South Korea, attitudes toward marriage are shifting, especially among women. While 50.3% of men still view it positively, only 24% of women feel the same. With limited support for working mothers, many choose to focus on their careers. Beyond love and partnership, marriage can also bring societal expectations, sometimes reshaping a womanā€™s identity, where she may be recognized more as a wife or mother than as an individual. For some, this is a fulfilling role; for others, it raises questions about balance and personal identity even for men, which is why mariage no longer a top priority.

Intern Diaries From SK

Theresa šŸ‘»Spring is finally making its way to Seoul, but with the changing seasons comes the time when everyone seems to get sick. The mix of warmer days and chilly nights makes it easy to catch a cold, so I've been trying to take it easy. Still, I made a trip to Kondae (Konkuk University area), a lively spot with plenty of restaurants, shops, and cafĆ©s. I wandered around the busy streets, grabbed a coffee, and just enjoyed the atmosphere. After that, I headed to the Han River for a bike ride, enjoying the fresh air and the first hints of spring. Even with the lingering winter chill, it felt great to be outside.

Hopefully, the weather evens out soonā€”until then, staying warm and avoiding the seasonal cold is the priority!

Q&A Corner

ā” Question: Is WATCHA Being Taken Over by BL, Anime, and C-Dramas?

šŸ’¬Youā€™re probably familiar with TVING and Wavve, the leading Korean OTT platforms, but WATCHA has carved out its own niche, especially with its diverse selection of movies and international content. A quick look at WATCHAā€™s current top-ranking content reveals a strong presence of BL/GL dramas, Japanese anime, and Chinese dramas. The platformā€™s exclusive BL drama, ā€œSecret Relationshipsā€, is sitting at #1, while anime, BL films, and international dramas dominate the rest of the top spots. 1ļøāƒ£ "Secret Relationships" (BL Drama, WATCHA Exclusive), 2ļøāƒ£ "Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle" (Anime), 3ļøāƒ£ "The Time of Fever" (BL Movie), 4ļøāƒ£ "Solo Leveling" (Anime), 5ļøāƒ£ "Friendly Rivalry" (GL Drama), 6ļøāƒ£ "Mr. Mikami's Classroom" (Japanese Drama), and 7ļøāƒ£ "Blossom" (C-Drama). Other trending titles on WATCHA include:Anime: ā€œThe Yuzuki Family's Four Sonsā€, ā€œCampfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skillā€, C-Drama: ā€œCao Xuanxuan's Love Journeyā€, ā€œFangs of Fortuneā€, J-Drama: ā€œMondai Bukkenā€, K-Drama: ā€œA History of Losersā€, and Western Film: ā€œ12 Angry Menā€. With such a lineup, itā€™s clear that WATCHA users are leaning heavily into BL, anime, and C-Dramas.

ā” Question: As a longtime K-Pop fan, how have artist comebacks evolved?

šŸ’¬In the second-gen and third-gen days, comebacks used to be simpleā€”one album version, and there was time to pick seats at the concert (me at BLACKPINK's first concert). Now, it's full-on with multiple album versions, sell-out pop-up stores within two seconds, and insane merch drops. G-Dragon's puzzle album concept? Insane! Don't even begin to discuss the ticket battle for JENNIE's pop-up store, Rubify. The album is also not yet available in music stores. For now, you can only buy it in the pop-up. The bright side is that there are so many more means of showing love and interacting with your favorites. This simply means that we need to work even harder to capture all these fangirling moments!

ā” Question: What are top Korean cities to visit in the spring?

šŸ’¬Spring is just on the horizon, with its official start date being March 20th. And with spring comes cherry blossom season, one of the busiest yet most beautiful times for a traveler to visit Korea.

Certain cities across the country are deemed perfect for cherry blossom viewing, and it seems thereā€™s data to show which ones are at the top of everyoneā€™s itinerary! Jeju City and Seogwipo, two cities on Jeju Island, have claimed first and second place respectively. And perhaps to no oneā€™s surprise, they are followed by Seoul and Busan at third and fourth. Goyang followed in fifth, which initially surprised many. But considering it has become a hot spot for numerous events and performances, the cityā€™s standing made all the more sense. The only trouble now is choosing one of these places to visit during the spring and cherry blossom season!
