“Korean culture is one of the most fascinating cultures. Being able to showcase Korean culture to the world is personally gratifying. I believe people are starting to learn more and more about Korean culture. I completely enjoy the fans’ reactions to the songs now,” BLACKPINK’s Rosé said in an interview with American Paper Magazine regarding how her song “Apartment (APT.)” is further raising interest in K-culture.
Rosé released “Apartment (APT.)” with pop star Bruno Mars on the 18th of last month. The song is inspired by the traditional Korean drinking game “Apartment Game” and has gained immense popularity with its addictive chorus ‘Apartment Apartment.’ After its release, it topped the ‘Billboard Global 200’ and ‘Global 200 (Excluding US)’ charts, and various videos enjoying the “Apartment Game” are flooding social media.
Rosé revealed that Bruno Mars chose “Apartment (APT.)” as the duet song candidate. “I was the only one around who believed Mars would sing ‘Apartment (APT.).’ Everyone else reacted with ‘He won’t sing that song, don’t send it,’ but I felt it had to be that song.” She mentioned that when she explained the meaning of ‘Apartment’ to Mars, he responded with ‘cool.’
Regarding her first full album “Rosie,” set to be released next month, she said, “I wanted to sing about the 20s, which is not an easy time in life,” and expressed, “I hope people accept that I am not much different from a normal girlfriend or a 23-year-old girl.” In particular, some of the songs in the album are about the negative comments on articles and the criticisms toward herself on social media. Rosé stated, “I realized how vulnerable and addicted I am to the online world. There was a longing to be loved and understood,” and added, “I wanted to clear up misunderstandings surrounding me and show the real me.”
BLACKPINK Rosé intends to continue conveying personal stories and sincere messages about Korean culture through her music. Fans are eagerly anticipating what stories will unfold in her next album and activities.
