K-Pop survival shows have given us some of the most successful K-Pop artists in the industry today. From record-breaking groups to chart-topping soloists, shows like “I-LAND” and “Produce 101” have been the birthplace of immense talent. One such soloist who was discovered from the aforementioned shows and is now making a name for himself in the K-Pop scene is SÉON.

The 24-year-old singer-songwriter debuted earlier this year with the release of his single album “Renaissance : Theater” and has now made his first comeback with “Renaissance : Architecture”, which serves as an artistic extension of his debut album while introducing new aspects of his sonic aesthetic. SÉON delves into R&B territory with this new release and is clearly opening up to his audience as he explores honesty and vulnerability in his lyrics.

What makes this album even more impressive is how SÉON curates a distinct identity for himself through it, not just because he co-wrote and co-composed all of the songs but also because listeners are able to pick up qualities unique to the singer in his music, qualities which are definitely easy to fall in love with and want more of. This is the type of album that creates a fandom, and it sure makes us look forward to everything he has in store for us next. You can listen to SÉON’s full album here.

In light of SÉON’s celebrated comeback, Kpopmap had the incredible opportunity to tune in with the rising star for an exclusive interview where he got candid about his survival show experience, plans for the future, music industry friends, and more.

So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

Welcome to Kpopmap, SÉON and congratulations on your new release! This is your first comeback since your solo debut earlier this year. Does it feel any different? What are 3 things you have learned during this short time?

I am already preparing for the next album, even though I recently made a comeback. It feels like I am finding my identity, and my musical style is getting more distinctive. I think you’ll be able to see this development even more clearly in the future.

“Renaissance : Architecture” is the second release in your “Renaissance” series. I’m curious about the reason behind naming this series “Renaissance”. Are “Theater” and “Architecture” connected? Will there be a third part in this series?

Yes, these two releases are connected to a certain degree. For the next album, I am thinking of trying something new with a different vibe.

It’s commendable that you write and compose your own music. We know the songs on this album were written during different parts of your life. Can you tell us a little bit about the personal experiences that inspired them?

Because I write my songs, I often capture emotions that I feel. However, rather than explaining each song in detail, I prefer listeners to insert their own stories or imaginations, so they can relate to the music more deeply.

You have the perfect voice for OSTs and you’re also interested in acting! Is there a K-Drama you wish you could’ve acted in and sung the OST for?

If I get the opportunity, I would love to participate in any drama. As for the genre, I would like to sing a sentimental ballad song.

What kinds of roles would you want to play in a K-Drama? Do you have any Korean actors you look up to?

There are so many roles that I want to try. I want to try them all. It’s hard to pick one specific actor who I admire, but I personally like Kim JaeUck.

Do you have any friends in the music industry that you look to for advice on music? What was the best advice you ever got?

I find that I don’t talk much about music with my friends in the music industry. Since it’s work, it feels like we’re still talking about work when we meet. Instead, we often talk about personal, everyday matters. I believe the public’s opinion on music is important, so I tend to discuss music more with friends who aren’t in the industry.

You have experience being on survival shows like “I-LAND” and “Produce 101”. What would you say you learned from that experience? If you had the chance, would you join a survival show again?

I am not a competitive person. However, I can say that I have gained a lot of experiences by participating in those shows, and that helped me to improve. I’ve met many good friends and have grown musically as well.

What does a “self-care day” look like for you?

I enjoy relaxing at home or going for a drive while listening to music.

If you could go viral for something other than your music, what would you want to go viral for?

I would like to appear on variety shows. Whether it’s on TV or YouTube, I’m open to both. I also want to try being a radio DJ.

Finally, do you have anything you’d like to say to fans all over the world who are supporting you?

From now on, I plan to make comebacks more frequently with even better music. So first, please look forward to a new single album that will be released this August. Thank you always.

You heard the man, guys! New music from SÉON is coming soon! Until then, don’t forget to stream “Renaissance : Architecture”!
