KBS1’s popular program ‘A Very Historical Journey’ heads to Miryang, Gyeongnam, for its nineteenth story on November 10th at 9:40 pm. This episode promises an in-depth historical exploration in Miryang, known as the home of patriotism and resistance.
Miryang is a sacred place and the hometown of numerous independence activists, leaving traces of resistance throughout Korean history from the Imjin War to the Japanese colonial period. With its majestic Yeongnam Alps and the Nakdong River, this place is imbued with a patriotic spirit as intense as the shining sunlight. Together with actor Lee SangYeob, we will explore these historical sites and reflect on their significance.
In particular, Miryang’s Pyochungsa Temple is a unique space where Buddhism and Confucianism coexist, and Monk Samyeong is remembered here as a symbol of patriotic Buddhism that protected the country. The monk soldiers he led achieved victories in battles like the Battle of Pyongyang Castle during the Imjin War and later achieved diplomatic success by repatriating Korean prisoners taken to Japan after the war. A tour of Pyochungsa will be a time to feel his spirit of love for the people and patriotism once again.
Miryang Hyanggyo in Gyodong is one of the three major hyanggyos in Yeongnam and offers a glimpse into the region’s passion for education. Alongside this, the modern complex cultural space ‘Byeotnui’ in Gyodong allows visitors to appreciate works by local artists and enjoy the Miryang Arirang. All these experiences deepen the understanding of Miryang’s rich culture and history.
Miryang is also a center of anti-Japanese independence movements during the Japanese colonial period, the birthplace of founding members of the Uiyeoldan. Notably, Kim WonBong and Yoon SeJoo, who were neighbor cousins born and raised in Miryang, stood together during crucial moments of the independence movement. Through this history, we will revisit the fiery lives of these two individuals.
Miryang’s signature dish, pork soup, also has a historical background. In the 1930s, Miryang was famous as one of the eight major cattle markets in the country, and the dish, made using the intestines of pigs and cows by commoners, became famous. We will listen to the stories and flavors at a third-generation pork soup eatery at Miryang Arirang Market.
Lastly, Miryang’s jujubes are renowned for their quality, accounting for about 15% of the national jujube production, boasting a long tradition. We will hear about the history of Miryang jujubes with a jujube farming family.
