Dallas was raining uncontrollably on Thursday, May 16th just so BM fans can have their thirst quenched. We all wondered what was going to happen since this tour has been shrouded in mystery from the beginning. The only thing we knew is that we needed to be very hydrated and open to anything that could happen.
Big Matthew was raised in Los Angeles before moving to Korea in 2011 and joining the SBS show “K-Pop Star”. After being eliminated, he was signed to DSP Media, where he eventually debuted on July 19, 2017, in KARD. While having great success in his group, he made his solo debut on July 2nd, 2021 with the song ‘BROKEN ME’. He also started his own fashion line called Staydium where he does collaborations with various charities around the world.
This is a hard review to write because this is definitely something that should be experienced rather than read. This is, from what I understand, the first 21+ and phoneless K-Pop concert tour. Of course, I had some expectations going in, considering I am a big fan of KARD and BM. I understood what this night might entail. What actually happened went far above my expectations. It was a sexy, sweaty-filled night with drinks flowing and people living in the moment. One of the biggest reasons for that was the pseudo-phoneless rule. The event wasn’t purely phoneless. The event staff put your phones into a plastic sleeve so you can still use your phone but it disabled the camera. I had some reservations but I really hope more tours take notes from this. I think we’ve all been to K-Pop concerts where we’re stuck behind someone blocking your view trying to get photos and videos of their faves so you’re left to just watch the concert through their phones. You might have been the person doing this too. No shame, we all have been. Without phones, fans were more engaged and less worried about the individual experience, but enjoying the crowd experience.
Before BM hit the stage, he had two openers, Korean-American rapper Uzuhan and Taiwanese-American singer sunkis. I hadn’t heard of either of these artists but I’m definitely keeping an eye on them in the future. They brought their own energies to the night while also preparing everyone for BM.
Once BM hit the stage, the crowd was almost uncontrollable. He performed his entire recent EP “Element” tracklist, which is ‘Embers’, ‘Nectar’, ‘Loyalty’, ‘Motion’, and ‘Badgirl Badboy’. He also did ‘LIE’, ‘BROKEN ME’, ‘Bad Intentions’, ‘ATAP (After The After Party)’, ’13IVI’, and ‘Body Movin’. He also performed his parts in ‘ICKY’ and ‘RSVP’. He connected with the audience, making the note that he didn’t see many men in the audience. He was visibly shocked when we made our presence heard. He gave a lucky fan in the audience a lapdance and had three people in the crowd come up on the stage for a twerking contest, to which he concluded with his own entry in said contest.
As a reaction to the crowd chanting “Take it off” over and over again, he quipped “You have to have dinner before you get dessert” before giving them a tease. Once dinner was finished, he served. He started removing articles of clothing everywhere while spraying water over the audience, which they desperately needed as everyone already was thirsty.
BM gave an experience that everyone won’t forget and many who missed out will wait impatiently for a second tour like this, due to word of mouth. With how successful this show was, I imagine he’ll want to do this again sooner rather than later.
