Netflix’s blockbuster ‘Squid Game 2’ is finally unveiling its secrets. On August 1, at a press conference held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno, Seoul, Director Hwang DongHyuk and CEO Kim JiYeon shared their anticipation for the new season of this popular series.
‘Squid Game 2’ centers on Seong GiHun (Lee JungJae), the winner from Season 1, as he enters the game once again three years later to find its organizer. This season will feature an intense showdown between Seong GiHun and the Front Man (Lee ByungHun), with even more complex games awaiting the audience. Director Hwang expressed, “I’ve been dedicated to this project for over two years, and it’s refreshing to finally share it.”
A significant change in Season 2 is that Seong GiHun participates with a clear purpose. Director Hwang explained, “In Season 1, Seong GiHun entered the game without knowing anything, but this time he returns with a clear goal to end the game.” Additionally, the vote on whether ‘to continue the game’ that appeared briefly in Season 1 will be more actively utilized in Season 2.
The scale and utilization of the sets have also expanded this season. Director Hwang stated, “We’ve put in a lot of effort to create a set that is more fairy-tale-like, beautiful, and charming.” He emphasized that understanding the game from the participants’ perspectives is the most enjoyable aspect, with games unique to Korea and those played worldwide being transformed and featured.
Regarding casting controversies, Director Hwang also clarified his stance. Addressing criticism regarding the casting of Choi SeungHyun, he stated, “The role played by Choi SeungHyun requires courage, and I thought he was suitable for it. The reason for this decision will be shown through the work.” He also expressed that he felt wronged by allegations of favoring actors from a specific company, emphasizing that he chose actors most fitting for the characters.
‘Squid Game 2’ will premiere worldwide on Netflix on December 26. As viewers anticipate a more intricate and profound story compared to Season 1, attention is focused on what kind of impression this work will leave. Director Hwang added, “I try not to obsess over numbers and would like to hear that the work has improved in terms of quality.” We look forward to seeing what kind of response this season will evoke.
