As anticipation for the Netflix series ‘Squid Game 2’ is rising, Director Hwang Dong-hyuk candidly shared his thoughts on the top casting controversy at the production announcement held on August 1. The event was also attended by Kim Ji-yeon, CEO of Firstman Studio, attracting much attention.
Director Hwang shared his struggles during the casting process for ‘Squid Game 2’. He explained, “In the case of Choi Seung-hyun (TOP), the casting decision was made after a significant amount of time had passed,” noting that it was a point when all legal procedures concerning his past issues were concluded, allowing a fresh start.
He continued, “More people than I expected expressed concerns, and I thought my judgment might have been short-sighted,” revealing that Choi Seung-hyun’s acting abilities were thoroughly verified. “Choi Seung-hyun showed a lot of effort and talent for this role,” he added, hinting that the decision was not easy.
Director Hwang personally has been paying attention to Choi Seung-hyun and highly evaluated his courage and suitability for the role. “There was controversy, but considering the process we went through together, it was a difficult decision to reverse this choice,” he emphasized, concluding that the reasons would inevitably be proven through the work. He also appealed, “I hope you will judge once the work is released after just a little more waiting.”
‘Squid Game 2′ portrays the intense confrontation between Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), who vows revenge and re-enters the game, and the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who welcomes him. It is set to be released on Netflix on December 26. Fans’ expectations are higher than ever to see what results Director Hwang’s decision will bring.
