Recently, with the announcement of a meeting between the group 2NE1 and Yang HyunSuk, the executive producer of YG Entertainment, fans’ expectations are rising.
YG Entertainment announced on the 25th, “Yang HyunSuk and the members of 2NE1 are scheduled to meet.” This follows last month’s meeting between Yang HyunSuk and CL, the leader of 2NE1. Although YG clarified that “it is not an official meeting,” the possibility of a full group comeback for 2NE1 is being raised once again.
As 2NE1 marks their 15th debut anniversary this year, speculation is arising that they are preparing a special project to commemorate the occasion. Previously, on the 17th, the members of 2NE1 attracted attention by sharing moments of them celebrating their 15th debut anniversary together.
These consecutive meetings between 2NE1 and YG are increasing the likelihood of their reunion. If they are discussing the release of a new song, it would be their first full group activity in 10 years since 2014.
Since their debut in 2009, 2NE1 has actively released multiple hit songs starting with their collaboration track ‘Lollipop’ with BIGBANG, followed by ‘Fire’, ‘I Am the Best’, ‘I Don’t Care’, ‘Lonely’, and more. However, after Minzy’s departure in 2016, YG announced the group’s disbandment, and their activities concluded with the digital single ‘Goodbye’ in 2017, excluding Minzy.
Despite this, 2NE1 solidified their unique position with their bold visuals and confident woman concept, standing out among girl groups that typically had cute or pure images, and are still referred to as a ‘legendary group’ to this day. In 2022, 2NE1 reunited on stage at the Coachella Music and Arts Festival in the U.S., drawing significant attention. It remains to be seen whether this meeting with Yang HyunSuk will lead to new music and performances from 2NE1.
Moreover, there is interest in whether the relationship between Yang HyunSuk and 2NE1 will proceed smoothly. As the final decision-maker at YG at the time, Yang HyunSuk faced considerable criticism related to the forced disbandment of 2NE1.
Minzy and CL revealed the fact of 2NE1’s forced disbandment in 2021, shocking fans. They shared, “We found out about the disbandment through news articles,” with CL recalling, “I received so many calls while having Thanksgiving dinner that it felt like my phone would explode.” She expressed her feelings at the time, saying, “It felt like my heart was being torn apart,” causing much sympathy.
Sandara Park also shared last year, “For several years after the disbandment, I cried just at the mention of ‘2NE1.’ Although I have a quiet and reserved personality, I didn’t have depression, but after the disbandment, I developed insomnia and social phobia,” indicating that she did not anticipate the team’s disbandment at all.
