After nearly three months, “Boys Planet” has ended and we have our nine debuting members of ZEROBASEONE, or ZB1 for short. For each of the trainees on the show, it was a stressful yet rewarding time improving their skills as idols and making long-lasting friendships. For us as viewers, it has been an entertaining, tumultuous and joyous time getting to know each of the trainees and see their talent flourish.
Now that the show has wrapped up, it is a good time to look back on some of the funny and sweet moments that encapsulate the journey of the trainees on the show.
1. Takuto first meeting the K-group Jellyfish Entertainment trainees
In episodes one and two, we were introduced to the trainees with the Star Level Test performances. In episode one, G-group trainee, Takuto, was waiting backstage to perform when the K-group trainees from Jellyfish Entertainment joined him. Because Takuto was by himself, he was initially nervous when the Jellyfish team, who were taller and dressed in black, first came in. He greeted them politely but he looked nervous and kept his distance.
Noticing this, Park GunWook invites Takuto to stand closer and makes conversation with him to get to know each other better. He even tells Takuto that he is cute. GunWook may seem intimidating at first because of his stature and confidence but from this very moment, and throughout the following episodes of the show, we find that he is actually a sweet and friendly person.
2. Seo Won, Cha WoongGi, Jung HoJin and Ji YunSeo settling into their dorm room
During the first few episodes of the show, the configuration of the dorm rooms had four boys to a room. Seo Won, Cha WoongKi, Jung HoJin and Ji YunSeo were rooming together and their experience as rooomates got off to an interesting start for YunSeo. While the other three trainees hit it off well with their lively and cheerful personalities, YunSeo was having a hard time keeping up. He tried to match their energy while they were all dancing to NewJeans’ ‘Hype Boy’ but it only lasted a short while before he went back to watching them in amusement.
3. Kim JiWoong comforting leader Seok Matthew
For the Dual Position Battle round, Seok Matthew was the leader of his team who were performing MONSTA X’s ‘Love Killa’. After working extremely hard together during their practise sessions and receiving criticism during training with the Star Masters, the team’s spirit was down. As the leader, Matthew had to remain positive to motivate his teammates and continue to figure out how to best practise for the performance. JiWoong could see that Matthew was in need of support so he took a moment to comfort him by empathising with him with his own past idol experiences and to assure him in his position as leader.
4. Sung HanBin and Zhang Hao being there for each other
Sung HanBin and Zhang Hao are the centres for K-group and G-group respectively and have shown good chemistry from the get-go. For the Dual Position Battle round, they were in a team together performing (G)I-DLE’s ‘Tomboy’. Feeling the pressure of living up to his rank and his reputation as K-group’s centre, HanBin was having an emotionally hard time trying to craft the perfect performance. In their dorms, Zhang Hao was there to comfort him as he cried and later the two were seen having a heart to heart conversation. HanBin then showed his appreciation for Zhang Hao by giving him a massage.
5. Unleashing their energy to protect the princess
The Field Day was the opportunity for the trainees to have some fun and unleash their crazy sides. During the Field Day, they played a game of ‘Protect The Princess’ where five of the trainees got dressed up as princesses. They each made shocking entrances with their new regal looks. The princesses were defended by the other trainees who were the knights.
Towards the end of the game, one of the princesses was getting attacked. Alongside another trainee, Na Kamden was protecting the princess by fending off the other knights with his strength and speed. He managed to eliminate one of the other princesses by taking off his wig and he was able to fight his way out when the other knights tackled him onto the ground. It was an entertaining moment especially because it was unexpected from someone like Kamden who is normally quite calm.
6. The Guerilla New Song Showcase
Episode nine featured the Guerilla New Song Showcase where the trainees performed the songs for the upcoming Artist Battle round. They initially did not know who the guests of the showcase were going to be until the curtains opened on stage. To their amazement, the guests were their family, friends and company colleagues.
They gave it their all to show their loved ones the performances they had been working on. Afterwards, they were able to spend some time with them after the stressful weeks at Planet Camp. Once they were back in the practise rooms with their teams, they received surprise letters from their loved ones who wrote them messages of support and encouragement. Amongst their teams, the trainees shared each of their letters and also had a heartfelt conversation about their idol dreams and what debuting means to them. Many tears were shed but the day recharged them and gave them the determination to make it to the end.
7. Showing appreciation towards the Star Masters
In the final episode of the show, the trainees came together to show their appreciation towards the Star Masters while having fun. They made paper carnations to wear on their heads and came up with some very creative designs. Afterwards, they decorated their own cakes to give to the Star Masters. They also sang the signal song, ‘Here I Am’, with adjusted lyrics to express their feelings throughout the show. They sang about how they’ve learned a lot from the Star Masters and were honest about how, at times, their comments during the training sessions were scary.
We’ve become attached to all the trainees of “Boys Planet” and we wait eagerly for ZEROBASEONE to begin activities as a group. Likewise, we hope to see the trainees who did not make the final line-up make their own next steps in their careers.
