1. One (2015)
‘One’ is a light-hearted dance pop that is about the members’ straight-foward confession towards their first love, singing that they are praying for the love from their crush and hoping that they can be together with him forever. The cute lyrics bring out GFRIEND’s image as teenage girls who bravely express their love for their love interest, which goes in line with the theme of the group’s school concept trilogy. The cheerful and sweet melody of the song together with the energetic and lovely choreography also perfectly depict teenage girls’ fluttering feelings when they are thinking about their crush, making this one of the most legendary love songs from GFRIEND’s early discography.
2. Gone With The Wind (2016)
One of the b-side tracks that showcase GFRIEND’s powerful and pure concept is ‘Gone With The Wind’. This song is an energetic dance-pop that is about the members overcoming hardships by sending all the pain and sadness to the wind, and that those hard times would become their source of comfort in the future. The rhythmic beats blend well with the orchestral sounds, which enrich the texture of the song and bring out the uplifting and hopeful message together with the powerful choreography. Moreover, YuJu’s high notes during the bridge are just incredible, which proves that she is one of the best K-Pop girl group main vocalists of all time.
3. Rainbow (2017)
‘Rainbow’ is a sentimental yet powerful dance track that conveys a motivational message. The lyrics use the rainbow to symbolize hope and the rainstorm to represent hardship, saying that just as a rainbow will appear after a rainstorm, new opportunities will emerge after tough times, thus encouraging listeners to stay positive and overcome challenges with courage and perseverance as they will be able to reach their dreams one day. EunHa singing “Nothing is impossible” with the soft piano instrumental at the beginning is truly beautiful and at the same time forms an interesting contrast with the electric guitar sound immediately after the opening. The energetic melody together with comforting lyrics align with the themes of youth and resilience of GFRIEND’s discography, and many Buddy said they should have promoted this song in music shows as a title track.
4. Memoria (Korean ver.) (2019)
‘Memoria’ was first released as GFRIEND’s debut Japanese single in 2018, and the group dropped a Korean version and included it in their second full-length album in the following year. Different from GFRIEND’s previous cute teenage girl image, ‘Memoria’ is a sentimental song that showcases a mature side of the girls as they sing their longing towards their lover, expressing their hope that the beautiful memories between them will stay forever in their hearts even as time moves on. This song highlights the members’ emotional and powerful vocals and evokes a bittersweet yet warm feeling. The members’ outfits on this stage are so pretty and they all look like elegant young women here!
5. Labyrinth (2020)
Following ‘Fingertip’ in 2017, GFRIEND attempted girl crush concept again with ‘Labyrinth’. ‘Labyrinth’ is a powerful EDM track that describes the complex feelings when facing a difficult choice by comparing it with being in a labyrinth. The song explores the themes of self-discovery, growth, and courage, and urges the listener to confront their fears and bravely make a choice instead of remaining stuck in confusion. The punchy beats throughout the song create tension and portray the unsettled emotional state accurately. Also, the choreography incorporates a lot of masculine movements such as pushing and punching that are not often seen in girl groups’ dances, which take the powerful image of GFRIEND to the next level and demonstrate the cool girl crush side of the girls. This stage proves that no matter how intense and complicated the choreography is, GFRIEND can still slay it in absolute synchronization!
